24 Mar RECURSION
This book is part of my own collection and I got this one maybe a month back. So, the story behind how I brought this book goes like this; I was looking at all the books on the fiction side of the Manorama Bookstores at Mall of Travancore, my favorite place to buy most of my books.
I got a few (yes you read it right) and decided this was enough for my February purchase.
But when I gave them to get billed, the sales person came up to me and I quote ‘Madam! You will like this book’! He gave me ‘Recursion’. I looked at its cover and let me be frank I did not like it even a bit. When I turned the book to read its synopsis, I was still not impressed but it was the first time the sales person in the bookstore actually came up to me and recommended a book.
I thought to myself, its just a book and I will eventually read it. But the shocking part was I took this book first to read before any other that I had brought with this.
Now let’s start with the author of this book. The man of the hour is Blake Crouch. He is a novelist and a screenwriter. He has a best seller in his bag ‘The Dark Matter’ and bestselling trilogy Wayward Pines that was converted into a television series for FOX entertainment. He has a website too and you could check that out if you are interested www.blakecrouch.com
And coming to the main part, the book review: Let’s start with the meaning of recursion. It means repeated application, a process in which a function calls itself as a subroutine. The whole book is based on this process. As a science graduate the book has made me think in various level of reasoning.
The main characters in the book are Barry Sutton a police cop and Helena Smith who is a research scientist. Barry Sutton had lost his daughter Megan to a very tragic accident when she was just 16 years old and his wife divorced after a year or so. He has been alone ever since until he comes across Ann Voss Peters who commits suicide in front of his eyes. Though there is no further investigation, he visits the person who Ann mentioned just before she died. That was the worst mistake that he ever did!
Helena on the other side of the world is stuck with a multi billionaire who promises her that he will invest in the cure for her Alzheimer mother and people like her!
What turns out to be the discovery of the millennia, becomes the unfathomable curse on the planet. The world is stuck in a vortex of time and just cannot escape the fate of a nuclear war. When Barry and Helena meet each other at the most unpredictable event, the realize they are the only ones who can save the planet Earth.
The key to escape this torment is with the master mind of the creator, but will she and Barry be able to save the world is the final pages of the book! The author has done a pretty amazing job and I totally recommend it. He is truly done his research in the field of quantum mechanics and alternate reality.
This book can definitely be made into a movie as the author had described in a more screenplay mode! I do recommend this book as it does question your intellect on many levels. It’s a medium pace read as you may have to stop and read certain previous pages.
I am looking forward to read his best seller Dark Matter!
RATING: 3.5 out of 5
